A sparkling hospital

Brunet-Saunier Architect’s inspiration was a local bricklaying tradition of creating patterns with lighter coloured bricks.

My friend, Dominique Kienlen of Rinaldi Structal, approached me to translate the dream into mirror patterns. This was supposed to be simple with only one size/pattern and a few extras. The 10 000 SQM envelope ended up with more than 100 patterns/size combinations!

Working with the Mol Coater’s and research centre’s amazing teams, we invented a new product for this project. We applied a silk-screening resist mask on glass.  The areas covered with resist mask remained clear.  Area without mask would receive the coating.  Those silk-screened parts were processed through a giant magnetron coater sputtering a custom-designed stainless steel-based coating on the whole surface. Finally, the silk-screened mask was removed to leave clear areas.

From this project, Glaverbel gained a unique capability to make “silk-screened mirror” on clear glass.
